“But Jesus did not commit himself unto them, because he knew all men.”John 2:24

In Jerusalem many believed in Christ because of the miracles He performed, yet Jesus did not entrust Himself to them. Why? Because He knew what was in their hearts (John 2:25). Man can be impressed by miracles, words, or outward religion, but Christ sees deeper than appearances. He knows motives, intentions, and the true condition of the soul. God is never deceived by outward profession. A man may appear faithful before others, but the Lord weighs the heart.

“Man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.”1 Samuel 16:7
“I the LORD search the heart.”Jeremiah 17:10

Christ Chooses According to the Heart

“And they prayed, and said, Thou, Lord, which knowest the hearts of all men, shew whether of these two thou hast chosen.”Acts 1:24

When the apostles needed to choose a replacement for Judas, they did not rely on reputation or outward ability. Instead they prayed to the Lord who knows the hearts of all men. God alone knew which man truly had the heart for the calling. This teaches a powerful truth: God’s work must be entrusted to those whose hearts He knows. Man may recommend, but Christ chooses.

“The LORD pondereth the hearts.”Proverbs 21:2
“All things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him.”Hebrews 4:13

Illustration #1 — David Chosen by God (1 Samuel 16:6–7)

When Samuel came to anoint a king, Jesse presented his strong and impressive sons. Samuel thought Eliab must surely be the chosen one. But God said: “Look not on his countenance… for the LORD seeth not as man seeth.” God rejected the outwardly impressive sons and chose David, a young shepherd boy whose heart was right before Him. David later proved this heart when he faced Goliath in faith (1 Samuel 17:45). God chooses by the heart, not by outward appearance.

Illustration #2 — Ananias and Sapphira (Acts 5:1–5)

Ananias and Sapphira appeared generous before the church by giving money. Outwardly it looked spiritual and sacrificial. But God knew the truth of their hearts — they were pretending to give everything while secretly holding part back. Peter said, “Why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost?” God judged them immediately, proving that nothing is hidden from Him. Men may be impressed by outward acts, but God sees the real motive.

These verses remind us of three sobering truths:

  • God sees the real heart.
  • God chooses servants based on the heart.
  • God cannot be deceived by outward religion.

Therefore the believer must pray like David: “Search me, O God, and know my heart… and lead me in the way everlasting.” (Psalm 139:23–24). The safest life is a life lived openly before the Lord who knows the hearts of all men.
