“My soul is among lions: and I lie even among them that are set on fire, even the sons of men, whose teeth are spears and arrows, and their tongue a sharp sword.”Psalm 57:4

“As a roaring lion, and a ranging bear; so is a wicked ruler over the poor people.”Proverbs 28:15

David describes living among lions — violent men whose words and actions are destructive. Their “teeth” are weapons and their “tongues” cut like swords. Proverbs expands this truth: wicked authority behaves like a roaring lion, devouring the weak. The Bible teaches that wicked men often operate through intimidation and cruelty. They roar to create fear. They threaten to control. But God’s people are not preserved by their own strength — God Himself is their refuge (Psalm 57:1). When the world roars like a lion, the believer must remember: Lions may surround you, but they do not rule you. God does.

Illustration #1 — Daniel in the Lions’ Den

Daniel literally faced lions in Daniel 6. Wicked rulers manipulated the law to destroy him because of his faithfulness to God. Yet Daniel continued praying. He did not surrender to fear or intimidation. God shut the lions’ mouths (Daniel 6:22). The lesson: wicked authority may roar, but God controls the den.

Illustration #2 — Paul Before Wicked Rulers

In Acts 24–26, Paul stood before corrupt leaders like Felix and Festus. They held power, yet they were morally compromised and unjust. Still Paul boldly preached Christ. Eventually he testified: “I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion.” (2 Timothy 4:17). The roaring rulers could threaten his life, but they could not silence the gospel.

Believers often live among “lions” — hostile people, corrupt authority, cruel words and threats. But the same God who protected Daniel in the den and Paul before rulers still keeps His people today. When lions roar, remember where your refuge is.

“In the shadow of thy wings will I make my refuge, until these calamities be overpast.”Psalm 57:1
