“When my spirit was overwhelmed within me, then thou knewest my path. In the way wherein I walked have they privily laid a snare for me.” — Psalm 142:3
“I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint: my heart is like wax; it is melted in the midst of my bowels.” — Psalm 22:14
There are times in life when the pressure is so great that the spirit feels crushed and the strength feels gone. David said, “my spirit was overwhelmed” — he was at the end of himself, hunted and burdened. Yet even there, he found comfort in this truth: “then thou knewest my path.” God knew every trap, every tear, and every turn.
Psalm 22 points prophetically to Jesus Christ on the cross. He said, “I am poured out like water.” The Lord Jesus was completely emptied in suffering so He could bear our sin. He understands what it is to be overwhelmed.
Sometimes God allows us to be poured out so we will learn that His strength is enough. When you feel empty, remember: God knows your path, and Christ knows your pain.
Job — Job 23:8-10
Job could not find God in his trial, yet he declared, “he knoweth the way that I take.” Though overwhelmed, Job trusted God’s refining hand.
Paul — 2 Corinthians 1:8-9
Paul said he was “pressed out of measure, above strength.” God allowed that pressure so Paul would not trust in himself, but in God who raises the dead.
Your spirit may be overwhelmed, but your path is never unknown to God.
When you are poured out, He is still pouring in grace.
