“Surely in vain the net is spread in the sight of any bird.”Proverbs 1:17

“Till a dart strike through his liver; as a bird hasteth to the snare, and knoweth not that it is for his life.”Proverbs 7:23

These verses present a striking contrast. Proverbs 1:17 teaches that even a bird has enough sense to avoid a trap it clearly sees. Yet Proverbs 7:23 describes a man so blinded by lust and temptation that he rushes into destruction like a bird flying into a snare.

Sin deceives people into ignoring dangers they would normally avoid. What appears attractive often conceals a deadly trap.

Samson — Judges 16:4-21

Samson repeatedly ignored the warning signs in his relationship with Delilah. Though the trap was being laid before his eyes, he continued down the path of compromise until he lost his strength, his sight, and his liberty. Like the bird in Proverbs 7:23, he hastened into the snare and paid a terrible price.

Temptation ignored becomes destruction experienced.

Judas Iscariot — Matthew 26:14-16, 47-50

Judas allowed greed to blind him to the consequences of betraying Christ. Thirty pieces of silver seemed attractive, but the trap was hidden beneath the reward. His pursuit of gain led to sorrow, ruin, and death.

Sin always conceals its true cost.

Satan never advertises the hook, only the bait. He never reveals the chain, only the pleasure.

  • The young man in Proverbs 7 saw the attraction but not the arrow.
  • Samson saw Delilah but not the blindness.
  • Judas saw the silver but not the sorrow.

Before taking the next step, ask yourself: “Where does this path end?”

“But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.”James 1:14-15

The wise man sees the trap and turns away. The foolish man sees only the bait and rushes forward.

Walk with God, heed His warnings, and avoid the hidden traps of sin.
