“For by means of a whorish woman a man is brought to a piece of bread: and the adulteress will hunt for the precious life.” — Proverbs 6:26
“And it shall come to pass, that every one that is left in thine house shall come and crouch to him for a piece of silver and a morsel of bread…” — 1 Samuel 2:36
Both verses reveal a sobering truth: sin promises gain but produces loss. What appears pleasurable or profitable for a season eventually leaves a person spiritually bankrupt.
The man in Proverbs loses his dignity and livelihood, while Eli’s house in 1 Samuel loses its priestly honor and is reduced to begging for bread. Sin always takes more than it gives. A moment of compromise can cost years of blessing.
Esau — Genesis 25:29-34
Esau traded his birthright for a bowl of pottage. He exchanged something precious and eternal for something temporary and fleshly. What seemed like a small decision left him impoverished spiritually.
Principle: Never trade God’s blessings for a momentary appetite.
Judas — Matthew 26:14-16
Judas sold the Lord Jesus Christ for thirty pieces of silver. He gained money but lost peace, joy, testimony, and ultimately his life. What looked like profit became tragedy.
The price of sin is always higher than the reward.
Many people surrender their testimony, purity, family, or fellowship with God for temporary pleasure or personal gain. Proverbs 6:26 warns that sin can reduce a man to “a piece of bread,” and 1 Samuel 2:36 shows how God’s judgment can bring a proud house to poverty.
Before yielding to temptation, ask yourself: “Is this worth what it will cost me?”
“Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.” — Galatians 6:7
Sin may offer bread today, but it often leaves famine tomorrow. Choose obedience, for God’s way always leads to lasting blessing.
