“As saith the proverb of the ancients, Wickedness proceedeth from the wicked: but mine hand shall not be upon thee.”1 Samuel 24:13

“Either make the tree good, and his fruit good; or else make the tree corrupt, and his fruit corrupt: for the tree is known by his fruit.”Matthew 12:33

David understood a powerful spiritual truth: what is in the heart eventually reveals itself through actions, words, and behavior. Saul’s continual hatred, pursuit, and mischief exposed the corruption working inside him. David refused to respond with the same spirit because he knew wickedness flows from a wicked heart.

Jesus taught the same principle in Matthew 12:33. A tree is identified by its fruit. Eventually:

  • Hidden motives surface.
  • Inward corruption appears.
  • The true condition of the heart becomes visible.

A person may hide their spirit temporarily, but over time:

  • Words reveal the heart.
  • Reactions reveal the heart.
  • Patterns reveal the root.

Cain — Genesis 4:5-8

Cain’s jealousy eventually revealed itself in murder. The anger hidden in his heart produced outward violence.

Ananias and Sapphira — Acts 5:1-5

Ananias and Sapphira outwardly appeared spiritual, but hidden deceit in their hearts was eventually exposed before the church.

The answer is not merely changing outward behavior — the heart must be right with God.

When Christ changes the root, the fruit changes also.
