“For the battle was there scattered over the face of all the country: and the wood devoured more people that day than the sword devoured.” — 2 Samuel 18:8
“Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil.” — Ecclesiastes 8:11
In Absalom’s rebellion, the soldiers feared the sword, but God used the forest. The wood devoured more men than the weapons of war. This reminds us that God’s judgments are not always immediate or obvious.
Many people mistake God’s patience for God’s approval. Because judgment is delayed, they become bolder in their sin. Yet God has a thousand ways to accomplish His purposes that men never see coming.
A person may think they have escaped the consequences of pride, rebellion, bitterness, or secret sin because nothing happens immediately. But God is never absent, never unaware, and never unable to act. What appears to be a delay is often mercy giving opportunity to repent.
Haman — Esther 5–7
Haman proudly plotted the destruction of Mordecai and the Jews. For a time, everything seemed to go his way. He gained influence, power, and favor. Yet God was working behind the scenes. The very gallows Haman built for Mordecai became the instrument of his own judgment.
“Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.” — Proverbs 16:18
Ananias and Sapphira — Acts 5
Ananias and Sapphira thought they could deceive God’s people and keep part of the price while pretending complete sacrifice. For a moment, their deception appeared successful. Yet God’s judgment suddenly fell, revealing that nothing is hidden from Him.
“Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.” — Galatians 6:7
When judgment is delayed, do not mistake God’s patience for His permission. The forest was already waiting for Absalom’s army, just as God’s justice is already prepared for every unrepented sin.
Today is the day to humble yourself, obey His voice, and walk in the fear of the Lord.
“The mills of God grind slowly, but they grind exceedingly small.”
God’s delays are mercy, not approval. Repent while the door of grace remains open.
