“Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart: Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness.”Ephesians 4:18-19

Sin never remains stationary. These verses reveal the downward progression of a heart moving away from God.

First, the understanding becomes darkened. Truth is no longer clearly seen. Then the heart becomes blind, resisting conviction and spiritual light. Finally, the person becomes “past feeling.”

That phrase speaks of a conscience that has grown numb: conviction no longer stirs, sin no longer grieves, and impurity no longer shocks the soul.

Paul says they “gave themselves over unto lasciviousness.” This is lust without restraint — sin openly embraced instead of resisted. The tragedy is not merely outward uncleanness, but inward deadness.

A person can hear preaching, read Scripture, and still slowly lose spiritual sensitivity by continually resisting truth. That is why believers must guard their heart carefully.

Proverbs 4:23“Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.”

Every ignored conviction weakens sensitivity to God. Every compromise makes the next compromise easier.

  • Stay tender toward conviction.
  • Confess sin quickly.
  • Do not normalize what God condemns.
  • Keep close fellowship with the Lord.

A heart that continually rejects light will eventually lose the ability to recognize darkness.

“When conviction grows quiet, corruption grows loud.”

The safest heart is not the perfect heart — it is the heart that still feels when God speaks.
