“And Absalom sent for Ahithophel the Gilonite, David’s counsellor, from his city, even from Giloh, while he offered sacrifices. And the conspiracy was strong; for the people increased continually with Absalom.”2 Samuel 15:12

“But it was thou, a man mine equal, my guide, and mine acquaintance.”Psalm 55:13

The deepest wounds often come from the closest relationships. David was not merely attacked by enemies — he was betrayed by Ahithophel, his trusted counselor. Psalm 55 is David’s broken prayer when he realized that someone he prayed with, worshiped with, and trusted had turned against him. It was not a Philistine sword that pierced his heart — it was familiar counsel. Betrayal from strangers hurts. Betrayal from friends wounds deeply. Yet even in betrayal, God remains sovereign.

Illustration #1 — Ahithophel’s Counsel

Ahithophel’s advice was considered “as if a man had inquired at the oracle of God” (2 Samuel 16:23). He was close. Trusted. Respected. But when Absalom rebelled, Ahithophel joined the conspiracy. David did not retaliate in fleshly anger. Instead, he prayed: “O LORD, I pray thee, turn the counsel of Ahithophel into foolishness.” (2 Samuel 15:31). God answered that prayer. When betrayal comes, take it upward before you take it outward.

Illustration #2 — Judas and Christ

Psalm 55 prophetically echoes in the life of the Lord Jesus. Judas Iscariot was not just a follower — he was one of the twelve. He ate with Christ. Walked with Christ. Ministered with Christ. Yet he betrayed Him with a kiss (Matthew 26:48–49). Jesus was not surprised. He was not shaken. He was not dethroned. Betrayal did not stop redemption. Betrayal cannot overturn God’s eternal purposes.

Do not be shocked when betrayal comes. Do not become bitter when friends fail. Do not allow wounded trust to destroy your faith. David kept worshiping. Christ kept going to the cross. Your calling is bigger than the conspiracy. Sometimes the enemy at the gate is less dangerous than the traitor at the table. But God sees both.

“Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee.” (Psalm 55:22). Remain faithful, even if others are not.
