“And the servants of the king of Syria said unto him, Their gods are gods of the hills; therefore they were stronger than we; but let us fight against them in the plain, and surely we shall be stronger than they.”1 Kings 20:23

“Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.”Ephesians 6:11

The Syrians learned something dangerous—they could not defeat Israel in the hills, so they changed the battlefield. They thought if they fought in the plains, they could win. This reveals a timeless spiritual truth: the enemy adapts.

Satan is not creative, but he is cunning. If he cannot get you through open temptation, he may come through subtle discouragement. If he cannot trap you in pride, he may attack through weariness. If he cannot defeat you in your strength, he will wait for your weakness.

That is why Paul warned about the “wiles” of the devil—his methods, schemes, and changing strategies. The devil studies patterns. He watches for vulnerable moments. The enemy may change tactics, but God never changes power.

Samson: Strength Undone by Flattery

In Judges 16, the enemy could not overpower Samson by force, so they used Delilah and persistence. What lions could not do, flattery accomplished. When strength could not be broken by violence, it was weakened by seduction.

Peter: A Different Attack by the Fire

In Luke 22:31, Jesus said: “Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat:” (Luke 22:31) Peter had boldly resisted before, but Satan changed tactics—from fear of death to fear of association. Around a fire, Peter fell.

The enemy often attacks differently than expected. Do not assume because you won yesterday’s battle that tomorrow’s battle will look the same. Stay dressed in the whole armour.

New battlefield.
Same devil.
Same God.
