“Deliver me, O LORD, from the evil man: preserve me from the violent man;
Which imagine mischiefs in their heart; continually are they gathered together for war.”
Psalm 140:1-2

“They gather themselves together, they hide themselves, they mark my steps, when they wait for my soul.”Psalm 56:6

David reveals a sobering truth: wickedness often begins in the heart before it appears in the hands. The enemy first imagines mischief, then marks your steps. There are people who study your weaknesses, watch your movements, and wait for an opportunity to wound. The devil works the same way. He is patient, observant, and strategic.

1 Peter 5:8“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour.”

The lesson is clear: not everyone around you is for you, and spiritual warfare is often hidden before it is visible.

Haman — Esther 3:5-6

Haman secretly plotted against Mordecai and all the Jews. His hatred was conceived in his heart before it became law in the kingdom. He “imagined mischief” and laid traps for God’s people.

Principle: The enemy often plots in secret long before the attack comes.

Judas — Luke 22:3-6

Judas secretly conspired to betray Christ. He watched for the right time and place to deliver Him into the hands of His enemies. Betrayal often comes from hidden plotting and close proximity.

Be discerning. Not every smile is sincere. Bring your fears and enemies to God like David did. When others are marking your steps, God is ordering them.

Psalm 37:23“The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD…”

Men may mark your steps for evil, but God orders your steps for good.
