“And Satan stood up against Israel, and provoked David to number Israel.” — 1 Chronicles 21:1
“And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.” — Matthew 4:3
The devil’s method has not changed. In 1 Chronicles 21:1, Satan provoked David to trust in numbers rather than God. In Matthew 4:3, Satan tempted Jesus to act independently of the Father’s will. In both passages, the enemy sought to move God’s servant from a place of faith to a place of self-reliance.
Satan often begins with a suggestion rather than a command. He plants thoughts that appeal to pride, fear, ambition, or fleshly desires. David listened and brought judgment upon Israel. Jesus resisted with Scripture and remained obedient to His Father. The difference was not the presence of temptation, but the response to it.
Believers must be vigilant. Every temptation is an invitation either to trust God or trust self. Victory comes when we answer temptation with God’s Word and submit to His will.
Eve in the Garden — Genesis 3:1-6
In Genesis 3:1-6, Satan questioned God’s Word and enticed Eve to seek wisdom apart from God’s command. She listened to the serpent’s suggestion and fell into sin. What began as a conversation ended in tragedy for all mankind.
Ananias and Sapphira — Acts 5:1-10
In Acts 5:1-10, Peter asked Ananias, “Why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost?” (Acts 5:3). Satan tempted them to seek the praise of men while pretending to be more spiritual than they were. Their deception brought swift judgment.
When the tempter comes, do not entertain his suggestions. Measure every thought by Scripture. David’s failure warns us of the danger of yielding, while Christ’s victory shows us the way to overcome.
1 Peter 5:8 — “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour.”
