“For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God?”1 Peter 4:17

“And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.”Matthew 3:10

Peter teaches that God deals with His own people first. Before He judges the unbelieving world, He examines, chastens, and purifies His house. John the Baptist adds that God’s axe is already laid at the root of the tree. God is not merely inspecting leaves, appearance, or profession — He is looking for genuine fruit.

The Lord desires reality, not hypocrisy; obedience, not empty religion. The believer should welcome God’s searching hand, allowing Him to remove sin and produce fruit that glorifies Christ.

Achan — Joshua 7:20-21

“And Achan answered Joshua, and said, Indeed I have sinned against the LORD God of Israel… When I saw among the spoils a goodly Babylonish garment, and two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold… then I coveted them, and took them; and, behold, they are hid in the earth in the midst of my tent…”

Before Israel could continue conquering Canaan, God dealt with sin within His own camp. Judgment began among God’s people. Hidden sin was exposed, and Israel was purified before moving forward.

Ananias — Acts 5:3-5

“But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost… thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God. And Ananias hearing these words fell down, and gave up the ghost…”

Before God judged the pagan world around the church, He dealt with hypocrisy within the church. God desires truth in the inward parts and fruit that is genuine.

“Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”Psalm 139:23-24

The axe is at the root. God is concerned with what we are beneath the surface. Let us invite His examination, confess our sin, and bear fruit that honors the Lord Jesus Christ.

Before God deals with the world, He first deals with His own house. May we be found faithful when He searches our hearts. Amen.
