“The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.” — Psalm 51:17
“Because thine heart was tender, and thou hast humbled thyself before the LORD… and hast rent thy clothes, and wept before me; I also have heard thee, saith the LORD.” — 2 Kings 22:19
God is not impressed with outward display — He is moved by inward surrender. David teaches us in Psalm 51 that the sacrifice God desires is not ritual, wealth, or position — it is a broken spirit. The word contrite means crushed, pulverized. It is the heart that says, “Lord, I am wrong. You are right.”
In 2 Kings 22:19, King Josiah heard the Word of God read, realized the nation’s sin, and instead of defending himself, he humbled himself. The Lord responded: “I also have heard thee.” Heaven listens to humility. A hard heart resists correction. A tender heart receives conviction. And God never despises brokenness.
Brokenness is not weakness — it is spiritual strength under submission.
David After His Sin (2 Samuel 12; Psalm 51)
When Nathan confronted David about his sin with Bathsheba, David did not argue. He said, “I have sinned against the LORD.” (2 Samuel 12:13). Instead of defending himself as king, he humbled himself as a sinner. Psalm 51 is the cry of that broken heart. Though there were consequences, God restored him. Why? Because God honors repentance.
The Publican in the Temple (Luke 18:13–14)
Jesus told of a publican who stood afar off and would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying: “God be merciful to me a sinner.”
Jesus said: “This man went down to his house justified…” The Pharisee had religion. The publican had brokenness. And brokenness won heaven’s approval.
In ministry, leadership, missions, and preaching — the greatest danger is not weakness, but hardness. God can use a broken vessel. He cannot use a proud one.
When the Word cuts — yield.
When conviction comes — bow.
When correction arrives — soften.
God says: “I also have heard thee.”
That is the promise to every tender heart.
