“Israel hath sinned, and they have also transgressed my covenant which I commanded them: for they have even taken of the accursed thing, and have also stolen, and dissembled also, and they have put it even among their own stuff.” — Joshua 7:11
“But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession, and kept back part of the price, his wife also being privy to it, and brought a certain part, and laid it at the apostles’ feet.” — Acts 5:1–2
In both passages, the issue was not just sin — but hidden sin covered with deception. What was buried in the tent and disguised at the altar was fully exposed before God. The Lord showed that He will not bless a people who harbor secret compromise.
Illustration #1 — Achan (Joshua 7)
Achan took of the accursed thing and hid it among his belongings. He stole secretly, he covered it carefully — but God revealed it publicly. Because of one man’s hidden sin, Israel suffered defeat at Ai and the whole camp was affected. You may hide sin from people, but you cannot hide it from God — and it will cost more than you think.
Illustration #2 — Ananias and Sapphira (Acts 5:1–5)
They gave an offering pretending full surrender, but secretly held back part. It was planned deception. It was spiritual hypocrisy. It was lying to the Holy Ghost. God judged them immediately to show: the church must remain pure and truthful before Him.
Hidden sin hinders victory.
Covered sin calls for judgment.
Private deception brings public exposure.
“Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts…” — Psalm 51:6
God is not impressed with outward appearance — He is looking for inward honesty. Before there can be victory in the camp… there must be cleansing in the camp.
