“Do good, O LORD, unto those that be good, and to them that are upright in their hearts.” — Psalm 125:4

“Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile!” — John 1:47

These two verses teach one powerful principle: God sees the upright heart, and He strengthens the upright path. In Psalm 125:4, the psalmist reminds us that God responds to a heart that is upright, sincere, and set toward Him. God does not bless perfection, but He does bless direction—a heart leaning toward righteousness.

In John 1:47, Jesus looks at Nathanael and instantly identifies the character of his heart: “An Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile.” Before Nathanael ever followed Christ, Christ saw what was true within him. Jesus rewards sincerity, even when it’s mixed with questions (vv. 46, 48–49). Taken together, these passages show that: God recognizes the heart that wants to do right. God rewards sincerity and honesty before Him. God shapes and strengthens those who walk uprightly.

Joseph. Joseph lived uprightly when no one was watching. Whether in Potiphar’s house, the prison, or the palace, God saw the purity of his heart. Genesis 39:2–4 — “The LORD was with Joseph… and made all that he did to prosper.” Though falsely accused and forgotten, God continued to “do good” to him because Joseph maintained an honest, upright heart. His life shows this truth: God honors those who walk uprightly even when their circumstances are unfair.

Cornelius (Acts 10). Cornelius was a Gentile, a soldier, and still in spiritual darkness—but his heart was sincere. Acts 10:2 “A devout man… that feared God… gave much alms… and prayed to God alway.” Before Peter ever preached to him, the Lord told Cornelius: Acts 10:4 — “Thy prayers and thine alms are come up for a memorial before God.” God saw his sincerity, and God brought him the light of the gospel. Cornelius illustrates this truth: God draws near to the heart that is honest, humble, and responsive to the light it has.

Psalm 125:4 and John 1:47 call us to the same place—Not perfect performance, but a pure heart. God sees the upright. God strengthens the upright. And God blesses the upright.
