“And he set the laver between the tent of the congregation and the altar, and put water there, to wash withal.”Exodus 40:30

“Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.”Hebrews 10:22

In Exodus 40, the laver stood between the altar and the tabernacle door. The sacrifice was offered at the altar, but before a priest could enter the holy place, he had to wash. The principle is clear: No one serves God effectively with dirty hands. No one draws near to God carelessly. Hebrews 10:22 brings this into the New Testament believer’s experience. Because of Christ’s sacrifice, we may “draw near” — but we must come:

  • With a true heart
  • With a sprinkled conscience
  • With a washed body

Salvation gives access. Cleansing gives fellowship.
The altar speaks of redemption. The laver speaks of purification.
You cannot skip the laver.

The Brazen Laver

When the priests neglected washing, it was deadly serious:

“When they go into the tabernacle… they shall wash with water, that they die not.”Exodus 30:20

The washing did not save them — they were already priests. It prepared them for service. You are redeemed by the blood of Christ. But daily cleansing through confession and the Word prepares you for holy service.

Peter’s Feet (John 13)

In John 13:10, Jesus said: “He that is washed needeth not save to wash his feet, but is clean every whit.”

Peter was already clean (saved), but his walk needed cleansing.
We do not get saved again and again.
But we must be cleansed again and again.

The altar = once-for-all salvation.
The laver = daily fellowship cleansing.

How Do We Wash Today?

  1. Confession – 1 John 1:9
  2. The Word – Ephesians 5:26
  3. Self-examination – Psalm 139:23–24

Before you serve — wash.
Before you teach — wash.
Before you preach — wash.
Before you lead — wash.

You can be active in ministry and still carry dust on your feet. God invites you to draw near — but He calls you to draw near clean.
