“In the same hour came forth fingers of a man’s hand, and wrote over against the candlestick upon the plaister of the wall of the king’s palace: and the king saw the part of the hand that wrote.” — Daniel 5:5
“That the triumphing of the wicked is short, and the joy of the hypocrite but for a moment?” — Job 20:5
Belshazzar was feasting, drinking, and mocking the holy vessels of God, thinking judgment was far away. But in one sudden moment, God interrupted his party with a handwritten warning on the wall. Job reminds us that the wicked may rejoice for a season, but it is always short-lived. Sin may look successful for a while, but God always has the final word.
The world celebrates rebellion, flesh, and pride, but their joy is temporary. The laughter of sin can quickly turn into the terror of judgment. What seems like a party today can become panic tomorrow when God steps in.
- Borrowed joy — the wicked borrow pleasure they cannot keep.
- Sudden judgment — God can stop the celebration in one moment.
Haman: Triumph That Turned to the Gallows
Haman went out joyful after being honored and invited to Esther’s banquet (Esther 5:9), but before long the tables turned. The gallows he built for Mordecai became his own place of execution (Esther 7:10). His triumph was short. Pride rejoices too soon.
Herod Agrippa: Applause, Then Judgment
In Acts 12:21-23, Herod sat in royal apparel and received worship as a god. The people shouted his praises, and for a moment he basked in glory. But immediately God smote him, and he died. The applause of men cannot protect from the judgment of God.
If there is unconfessed sin in your life, do not wait until God writes on your wall. The joy of sin is brief, but the consequences can be lasting.
Better to humble yourself now—
than be humbled later.
