“A fool hath no delight in understanding, but that his heart may discover itself.”Proverbs 18:2

“Wherefore is there a price in the hand of a fool to get wisdom, seeing he hath no heart to it?”Proverbs 17:16

A fool is not merely someone who lacks knowledge; he is someone who has no desire for God’s truth. Proverbs 18:2 teaches that a fool is more interested in expressing his own opinions than learning God’s wisdom. Proverbs 17:16 shows that even when the opportunity to gain wisdom is placed in his hand, he will not benefit because his heart is not set on receiving it.

Many people want their own thoughts confirmed rather than their lives corrected. They talk more than they listen, defend themselves rather than examine themselves, and reject instruction rather than receive it. Wisdom is available, but a rebellious heart cannot profit from it.

Rehoboam — 1 Kings 12:1-19

Rehoboam had wise counselors available to him. He possessed the opportunity to gain wisdom, yet he rejected their counsel and followed the advice of foolish young men. He had the “price in his hand,” but no heart for wisdom. His pride cost him most of the kingdom.

Felix — Acts 24:24-27

Felix listened to Paul preach concerning righteousness, temperance, and judgment to come. He had access to God’s truth, yet he delayed and refused to respond. He heard wisdom but had no heart to receive it. Opportunity was present, but obedience was absent.

God’s wisdom is not hidden from those who seek it. The question is not whether wisdom is available, but whether we have a heart to receive it. A teachable spirit delights in understanding, welcomes correction, and treasures God’s truth above personal opinion.

Psalm 119:34“Give me understanding, and I shall keep thy law; yea, I shall observe it with my whole heart.”
