“The king said moreover to Shimei, Thou knowest all the wickedness which thine heart is privy to, that thou didst to David my father: therefore the LORD shall return thy wickedness upon thine own head;”1 Kings 2:44

“For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things.”1 John 3:20

One of the most powerful witnesses God has placed inside every person is the conscience. Solomon reminded Shimei that before any earthly judgment came, he already knew in his own heart the evil he had done. Shimei may have hidden his guilt from others, but he could not hide it from himself or from God.

Likewise, John teaches that if our heart condemns us, God knows even more than our conscience reveals. We may silence conviction, excuse our actions, or justify our behavior, but God sees the whole truth. The heart is a courtroom where God often begins His work of conviction.

The answer is not to ignore conviction but to respond to it. A tender conscience is a gift from God. When He reveals sin, we should confess it, forsake it, and seek His mercy. What is hidden from men is never hidden from God.

Achan — Joshua 7:20-21

Achan secretly took the accursed thing from Jericho and hid it in his tent. No one else knew what he had done, but his heart was privy to his sin. When he was exposed, he confessed: “Indeed I have sinned against the LORD God of Israel…” (Joshua 7:20). His conscience knew the truth long before the judgment came. The hidden sin eventually became an open shame.

Judas Iscariot — Matthew 27:3-5

After betraying the Lord Jesus Christ, Judas was overwhelmed with guilt. He returned the thirty pieces of silver and admitted: “I have sinned in that I have betrayed the innocent blood.” (Matthew 27:4). His conscience testified against him. Though he tried to escape the consequences, he could not escape the witness within. His heart condemned him because he knew what he had done.

Before God ever exposes sin publicly, He often exposes it privately in the heart. The safest response to conviction is immediate repentance. A guilty conscience is God’s warning light before His judgment falls.
Listen when God speaks to your heart.
