“…they came unto the iron gate that leadeth unto the city; which opened to them of his own accord…” — Acts 12:10
“For a great door and effectual is opened unto me, and there are many adversaries.” — 1 Corinthians 16:9
There is a powerful truth in these two passages: when God opens a door, it is often surrounded by opposition. In Acts 12, Peter is imprisoned, bound with chains, guarded by soldiers, and shut behind an iron gate. Humanly speaking, there is no way out. But when God determines to open a door, no prison can hold, no chain can bind, and no gate can resist. The iron gate “opened… of his own accord.” God did what man could not do.
In 1 Corinthians 16:9, Paul speaks of a “great door and effectual” — an opportunity given by God — yet he immediately adds, “and there are many adversaries.” The open door did not remove opposition; it attracted it.
God’s open doors are often accompanied by great resistance — but His power is greater than both.
Illustration #1 — David at the Door of the Kingdom (1 Samuel 17)
David stood before Goliath when no one else would. God had opened a door for Israel’s deliverance, but it came with a giant adversary. The opportunity to glorify God was real — but so was the opposition. David did not run from the battle; he stepped through the door by faith: “The battle is the LORD’S…” (1 Samuel 17:47). The greater the door, the greater the enemy — but also the greater the victory when God is in it.
Illustration #2 — The Gospel Opens Europe (Acts 16:6–10, 22–26)
Paul received the Macedonian call — a divine open door to preach the gospel in Europe. Yet shortly after entering that door, he is beaten, imprisoned, and placed in stocks. But at midnight, God shook the prison, opened the doors, and loosed the bands. Just like Peter in Acts 12 — when God opens a door, no prison can shut it.
- Do not be discouraged by opposition — it often confirms you are in the will of God.
- Do not fear the “iron gates” — God opens them in His time.
- Walk through every door God opens, trusting Him with the adversaries.
If God opens the door, He will handle the resistance on the other side. Some of the greatest doors in your life will look like prisons before they open. Stay faithful — God knows how to open iron gates.
