“Lay not wait, O wicked man, against the dwelling of the righteous; spoil not his resting place.” — Proverbs 24:15
“And my people shall dwell in a peaceable habitation, and in sure dwellings, and in quiet resting places.” — Isaiah 32:18
There is a contrast in these verses: the attack of the wicked and the assurance of the righteous. In Proverbs, the righteous man has a dwelling — a place of rest, stability, and order. Yet the wicked are always lurking, seeking to disturb, to spoil, to unsettle what God has established. The Christian life is not free from opposition. The enemy watches for moments of weakness, seeking to break the peace God has given.
But Isaiah lifts our eyes higher — God promises His people a peaceable habitation, a sure dwelling, and quiet resting places. What the enemy tries to disturb, God secures. What the wicked attempt to spoil, God preserves. The righteous may be targeted, but they are ultimately settled by God.
Illustration #1 — Job’s Protected Dwelling
In Job 1, Satan desired to destroy Job’s life — his home, his family, his substance. Yet he acknowledged: “Hast not thou made an hedge about him…?” (Job 1:10). Job’s dwelling was under divine protection. Though attacks came, they were limited by God’s hand. Even when his “resting place” was shaken, his standing with God remained secure. The enemy could touch his circumstances, but not overthrow his relationship with God.
Illustration #2 — The House Built on the Rock (Matthew 7:24–25)
Jesus said: “Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them… the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew… and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.” (Matthew 7:24–25). Here is a man whose “dwelling” is assaulted — rain, floods, winds. Yet it stands. Why? Because it is founded upon Christ. The attacks are real — but so is the foundation.
The devil still “lays wait” against the believer’s peace — through discouragement, division, and temptation. But God gives a sure dwelling — a settled heart anchored in Him. Your peace is not in the absence of attack, but in the presence of God.
The enemy may knock at your door — but he cannot move your foundation if you are resting in Christ. Stay in your dwelling. Stay in His peace.
