“Thorns and snares are in the way of the froward: he that doth keep his soul shall be far from them.” — Proverbs 22:5
“Not for any injustice in mine hands: also my prayer is pure.” — Job 16:17
Proverbs warns us that the crooked path is filled with “thorns and snares.” The word froward speaks of someone twisted, stubborn, morally bent. Sin never travels alone. It brings consequences. But the verse adds hope: “He that doth keep his soul shall be far from them.” Guard your soul — and you avoid many traps.
Job 16:17 shows the other side: “Not for any injustice in mine hands: also my prayer is pure.” Job was suffering deeply, yet he maintained integrity. His hands were clean. His prayer was pure. He guarded his soul even in hardship.
The Principle: A crooked heart leads to painful consequences. A guarded soul preserves purity and peace. Integrity protects you from many snares. Pure prayer flows from clean hands.
Psalm 24:3–4 says: “He that hath clean hands, and a pure heart…” Purity is protection.
Daniel (Daniel 6)
Daniel lived in a corrupt government. He could have: Compromised. Adjusted his convictions. Hidden his faith.
Instead, he kept his soul. Even when prayer was outlawed, Daniel prayed openly. He avoided the “thorns and snares” of moral compromise — though he faced lions, he escaped corruption. God preserved him because he preserved his integrity.
Joseph in Egypt (Matthew 1:18–25)
Joseph could have responded to Mary’s pregnancy with anger or public shame. Instead, he was described as a “just man.” He guarded his soul. He chose mercy over reaction. Later, when warned in a dream, he obeyed immediately. His purity of heart allowed him to walk in God’s direction without hesitation. Integrity positions you to hear God clearly.
Thorns and snares are real: Hidden traps. Moral compromise. Bitterness. Secret sin.
But when you: Guard your thoughts. Keep your hands clean. Maintain pure prayer — you avoid many of life’s wounds.
Not every trial is punishment — Job proves that. But many troubles are preventable through integrity. You cannot control every hardship. But you can guard your soul.
Crooked paths cut deeply.
Pure hands walk safely.
Keep your soul —
and you will walk far from the thorns.
