“If thy presence go not with me, carry us not up hence.” —Exodus 33:15
“There be many that say, Who will shew us any good? LORD, lift thou up the light of thy countenance upon us.” —Psalm 4:6
In Exodus 33:15, Moses refuses to move forward without the presence of God. Israel had land promised, direction given, and opportunity ahead — but Moses knew that success without God’s presence is failure in disguise. He would rather stay in the wilderness with God than advance into blessing without Him.
Psalm 4:6 echoes the same hunger. While many chase visible good and earthly advantage, David asks for something higher: “the light of thy countenance.” He desired God’s favor and nearness above material gain. The world measures good by possessions and circumstances; the believer measures good by God’s presence.
Together these verses teach a powerful truth: the greatest good in life is not what God gives, but God Himself. A heart that truly walks with the Lord learns to prize His presence above progress, comfort, or applause.
Abraham’s Altars (Genesis 12:7–8)
When Abraham journeyed toward Canaan, he built altars wherever God appeared to him. Before establishing cities or securing wealth, Abraham established worship. His priority was communion with God. Like Moses, he understood that the blessing of the journey was the presence of the Lord along the way.
The Road to Emmaus (Luke 24:28–32)
The disciples on the road to Emmaus encountered the risen Christ. When Jesus made as though He would go further, they urged Him to stay. After He revealed Himself, they said, “Did not our heart burn within us…?” His presence stirred their hearts more than the news they carried. Fellowship with Christ transformed their fear into joyful witness.
Many voices still ask, “Who will shew us any good?” The answer for the believer is the same as Moses and David declared: we must seek God’s presence above all else. When His countenance shines upon us, we have the greatest treasure heaven can give. A life guided by His presence will never be empty, even in the wilderness.
